About Shanghai Bun Chinese Tapas Bar

Shanghai Bun Chinese Tapas Bar is a welcoming dining destination that brings together the energy of a modern bar, the comfort of a neighborhood restaurant, and the appeal of a Chinese kitchen built for sharing. It offers a relaxed place where guests can settle in for a quick stop, a leisurely meal, or an evening out with friends, family, or colleagues. With a style that is casual yet polished, it fits naturally into a wide range of occasions, from a midday lunch break to a late dinner, from solo dining to group gatherings, and from an easy bite to a more extended dining experience.

What makes this restaurant stand out is its focus on variety and flexibility. The menu approach blends traditional Chinese flavors with the small-plate format often associated with tapas, making it easy for guests to sample multiple dishes in one visit. That format encourages conversation, sharing, and discovery, which is especially appealing for diners who enjoy trying different textures, sauces, and preparation styles without committing to a single large entrΓ©e. It also makes the restaurant approachable for both newcomers to Chinese cuisine and regulars looking for something familiar but presented in a fresh way.

The atmosphere is designed to feel comfortable and contemporary. Guests can choose to dine indoors or enjoy outdoor seating when the weather is pleasant, and the setting is suited to both quiet meals and more social occasions. The space supports a variety of preferences, whether someone wants a calm spot for a solo meal, a table for a family outing, or a lively place to meet over drinks and shared dishes. The presence of a bar adds another dimension to the experience, giving visitors options for cocktails, beer, wine, and other beverages that pair well with the food and help shape the mood of the visit.

Convenience is another important part of the experience. The restaurant supports dine-in, takeout, delivery, and no-contact delivery, making it easy for customers to enjoy the food in whatever way works best for them. This kind of service flexibility is especially valuable for busy schedules, informal meals, and customers who prefer to eat at home but still want restaurant-quality Chinese food. Fast service also adds to the appeal, helping the restaurant serve guests efficiently without losing the sense of hospitality that makes a dining experience memorable.

Shanghai Bun Chinese Tapas Bar also appears to be attentive to different dietary needs and dining preferences. Vegetarian options and healthy choices make the menu more inclusive, while the availability of small plates and quick bites supports lighter appetites and more casual visits. At the same time, the restaurant remains suitable for those seeking a fuller meal, with choices that can satisfy a range of tastes and hunger levels. This balance between accessibility and variety helps the restaurant serve a broad audience rather than a single type of diner.

The overall feel is trendy but still comfortable, with a cozy character that invites guests to stay awhile. Its appeal lies in combining good food, flexible service, and a social dining format that works for many situations. For people looking for Chinese cuisine with a modern, shareable approach, Shanghai Bun Chinese Tapas Bar offers a distinctive experience that feels both practical and inviting.

I went in for soup dumplings and it did not disappoint! I ordered the pork dumplings (soup dumplings) and the griddled pork & chives dumplings, they were incredibly hot and fresh.

Happy hour is from 3-6pm. We arrived before it ended and so we took advantage of their happy hour specials. There is a small parking lot behind the restaurant. We were greeted by a friendly and nice waiter and seated right away. There was only one other party in the restaurant on a Saturday evening. The food was hit or miss. The scallion pancakes were very oily, but the spicy wontons were good. The Char Siu Bao was ok but we liked the Har Gow shrimp dumplings. The pan fried pork and chives dumplings were a bit disappointing but we liked the duck bao tacos. The hot sake was a deal on the happy hour menu and we enjoyed that with our meal. Might try them again for dinner options next time we're in the area. My friend wanted dumplings that evening we were there.

Great location, very quaint. I love that part of Point Loma. Great variety of buns to choose from, some are more tastier then others, but definitely something for everyone. The back patio is now dog friendly. I highly recommend the scallion pancakes and get the large sampler for the variety. Great happy hour as well. There is a small parking lot in the back and street parking.

Singapore fried rice noodles had lots of chicken, shrimp, pork and eggs (10/10). The spicy wontons in chili sauce were not spicy, and found them mild but still enjoyable.

Easy vibe, not uptight or pretentious. Excellent quality, fresh, flavorful cuisine. Also an excellent value. I ordered three items, in honor of my mom & I (it’s Mother’s Day; she passed 12 years ago). Each item was bountiful & swiftly served (I have two more full meals left over). I even made it in time to catch the sunset! Greatly appreciative of a friend’s recommendation; I’ll definitely be back! Oh, & Sandy & team were awesome!!!
